The PGA of Sweden have taken the lead through Round 01 of the 2018 PGAs of Europe International Team Championship, with an opening score of six-under par (136) at The Dunes Course at Costa Navarino in Greece.
With 22 teams from across the Association’s Membership, the prestigious 30-year old International Team Championship is a 72-hole team stroke play event with the two best scores from the team of three to count in each round.
The opening round saw team Sweden, captained by PGA Professional, Fredrik Larsson, alongside Henrik Johansson and Johan Gullstrand, take an early three-shot lead ahead of the PGA of Belgium.
“I couldn’t have asked for more than this start” said Larsson. “I had a decent round but my team did a really good job today so I’m looking forward for tomorrow.”
With the lowest score of the day amongst the entire field of players, Gullstrand’s own 65 (-6) contributed significantly towards the team’s total score – “I had a good day on the greens and a good day off the tee so it was fun to play today.”
“Tomorrow we’ll play as we have planned. We won’t make it too hard and will simply play shot by shot, hole by hole,” added Johansson who had an opening round of 71 (E).
In second at three-under par (139), the PGA of Belgium, captained by Guillame Watremez, along with Nicolas Vanhootegem and Didier De Vooght, laid the groundwork for a solid start to the 72-hole Championship, whilst the PGA in Wales and PGA of Denmark teams sit in third place at one-under par (141).
Among those playing in the Team Shield Category (for PGAs with less than 100 members), the PGA of Greece, captained by Adam Kritikos, with Panayiotis Karantzias and Chryssanthos Diakou, are currently leading with a total of one-over par (143).
